DESERT REFERENCES - ABSTRACT LANDSCAPES  The landforms of California’s Coachella Valley, a northwestern extension of the great Sonoran desert still surprise me. Registering the light and ephemeral palette of the desert used to be harder for me (eyes grown up on Pennsylvania green), but I now see that our desert is a world of contrasts: intense and subtle, hostile and fragile, endless beige and red-orange-blue-purple brightness, contrasts which supply me with an endless source of subjects.
